How custom BYIBA pendant and recessed fixtures were specified to create a landmark ceiling installation in a grand aviation atrium.

In a large-scale public atrium, the ceiling isn’t background — it’s the space. Everything else is organized around it. Get it wrong and the volume feels empty. Get it right and the entire building has an identity.

This installation gets it exactly right — and it does so with three BYIBA products working together.

THE INSTALLATION

Hundreds of custom crystal star-shaped pendants are suspended at varying heights across a circular mirrored ceiling. The mirrored surface doubles every element, making the composition appear to extend infinitely upward. Two recessed fixture families handle the technical lighting that makes the installation perform: the MINILED ROUND provides precise directional spotlighting — its interchangeable lenses allowing beam angles from 20° to 50° to be tuned to each zone — while the GRU’s large conical recess delivers soft, diffused ambient fill across the ceiling plane. Warm gold perimeter lighting wraps the curved atrium edge, framing the whole composition without competing with it.

WHY IT WORKS

The MINILED ROUND and GRU work invisibly — their job is to make the crystal pendants perform, not to be noticed themselves. That hierarchy is the key to the whole installation: the pendants are the event, the recessed fixtures are the infrastructure that makes the event possible.
